A favorite project for many of my students is gathering information on their teachers, grand teachers, great-grand teachers, and so forth. It's remarkable to not only find how we are all linked musically but also to gain insights into "where we got our stuff," as one of my students described the process.
In June of 2013 I had the pleasure of presenting "Our Trumpet Heritage" at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my beloved teacher, Bill Pfund, and stellar former student, Chris Wilson. We each performed and took time to express our gratitude to each other and to reflect on our other teachers, many of whom are now deceased. Rather than just focus on their significant careers, we also enjoyed sharing short stories related to their musical and personal values, life experiences and contributions to the art of music and trumpet playing.
Below you will find a link to the visual presentation (based upon the Prezi application) we used during the recital as well as a recording of James Stephenson's Legacies for Three, commissioned specifically for this presentation and a fine addition to our repertory.
